History Lives On In Galveston

In 1785, the Spanish discovered Galveston Island, named for the Governor of Spanish Louisiana, Bernardo de Gálvez. You will be able to walk the historic areas and streets where Jean Lafitte who, with his pirate crew, fought with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. According to legend, Lafitte was not trustworthy and Louisiana threw him out. Lafitte and his pirate crew decamped to his private kingdom “Campeche” (Campeachy) on Galveston Island. There they preyed upon the rich shipping lanes of the Gulf, supposedly amassing a vast treasure trove. In 1821 Lafitte left Campeche and disappeared forever. Locals swear that his abandoned treasure is still on the island. Perhaps you will find a gold coin as you walk the historic landmarks!
