The History of Oak Forest
Developed in 1946, most of the first homes in the Oak Forest neighborhood were sold to World War II veterans. Founded by Frank Sharp, Oak Forest Realty Corporation built the first phase from Golf Drive to Oak Forest Drive, and Dubarry to W. 43rd. Mr. Sharp continued development of the neighborhood adding 17 more sections.
A Total Planned Community
Early on in the development of the community, space was dedicated to four community parks within the area including T.C. Jester, Candlelight, American Legion and Oak Forest Park. Land was also set aside for business districts and commercial development. Oak Forest was annexed by the City of Houston in 1949. In the year 2000, there were 5,523 homes in Oak Forest with a population of over 23,000 residents. Today the area is the third largest neighborhood in greater Houston.
